Your starships is basically your character, and your bridge officers are your powers for the ship. You can select any ship in the game for use, and it is recommended you pick the ship that is best suited for your character. If you are a Tactical Officer, you would go for Escorts, Engineers would go for cruisers, and Science Officers would go for Science Vessels. However this is entirely your decision and you can pick any ship in the game that you like (as long as it matches your level.)

Your starship has slots for different items that will boost your stats and skills during combat. You can mount various weapon types and torpedoes on your ship, like Phasers, and Photons, or Quantums and Disruptors. Each weapon has a different "proc" ability, which will allow you to get an advantage over your enemy. A Warp Core allows you to move in sector space and also grants you power boosts to certain systems. The Romulan version, the Singularity core, boosts your singularity powers and your systems as well. Your impulse engines allow you to move around during combat and missions, and gives you increases in turn rate, flight speed, and full impulse. There are also different types of shields which will protect your hull at the cost of bleedthrough from weapons such as plasma torpedoes, but certain procs will allow your shields to stay up longer, preventing hull damage. Your deflector will boost Science abilities, like sensors or shields. Devices like batteries can be purchased to increase shields, weapons, engine, or auxiliary stats on your ship. Tactical consoles will boost your offensive abilities in combat. Engineering and some Science consoles will boost your defensive skills, but most Science consoles often are used to benefit exotic damage types like Gravity Well or Tyken's Rift, for example.

Finally, your ship is also equipped with Bridge Officers who come with powers such as Cannon: Rapid Fire which boosts your cannons, or Beam Overload which fires a powerful beam burst at your opponents. Various abilities can be purchased or "trained" by your officers, and there are only 3 ranks of BOFF powers available. Not all are available from trainers, you might need to find them on the exchange.
