The Geronimo, the Magellan, and the Ariadne engaged the Tholian force, barely coming out on top against their unexpectedly advanced weaponry. With warp capability crippled, the crew was forced to quickly throw together a plan of action. The Ariadne's advanced sensors detected traces of a previously undiscovered particle throughout the sector, identified by Harrad-Okar as chronitons, a clear sign of disruption in the space-time continuum.

Unfortunately, there was no time to ponder this finding, as a response force of eighty ships began to bear down on the crew. Suddenly, a chroniton field began to form nearby, potentially offering the ships a chance of escape. With no other options, they dove straight into the anomaly. The Magellan and the Ariadne were picked off, leaving the Geronimo the sole survivor. Just as all looked lost, however, the Tholian ships spun out of control. Curiously, there were no lifesigns. A surviving Tholian ship retreated from the system, sending an ominous message across the border:

"The man from the other side was wrong. The Federation ships were able to destroy our fleet, despite our weapons. Execute the plan."

Almost immediately, a surge of chronitons appeared on long-range sensors, followed by a subspace shockwave in the fabric of space-time that engulfed the ship. By the end of the episode, everyone was left wondering:

What the hell is going to happen now?
