Electromagnetic storms in the atmosphere of the planet prevented the evacuation shuttles from achieving orbit. The shuttle carrying Barnes, Cameron, and a handful of junior officers crashed in a canyon. Struggling with Cameron's severe concussion and an active fault line shaking the ground, they made their way through the canyon, following the trail of another Starfleet transponder.

As the air got warmer, and the tremors more intense, the crew began to worry. Rightfully so, as it turned out. The shuttle broadcasting they'd detected had crashed into the mouth of an inactive volcano... but hope wasn't lost. A faint combadge signal was detected in the wall of the volcano. A nearby opening offered the team an entrance, but the path to it was dangerous, only a few outward rock formations standing between the cavern and certain death.

After a few brushes with fate, the crew arrived in the bottom of the cavern, finding an unconscious Captain He and the remains of Lieutenant Adams next to a portable communications array. After affecting some minor repairs, the team sent an emergency distress signal, hoping that Starfleet would arrive before the Tholians could trace their signal.
