Things have changed since the last time we were here.

The Twelfth Doctor Regenerates

Matt Smith had made way for Peter Capaldi. The promotional campaign for the eighth series of the modern show promised a "darker" and "less-accessible" take on the famous Time Lord. While the 12th Doctor and his era evolved over time, things have been flipped on their head since it was announced that both Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat would make way for a brand new era.

Thirteen Doctor Reveal

On July 16th 2017, millions watched live as Jodie Whittaker was revealed as the Thirteenth Doctor. While gender-changing Time Lords had been cemented in to the show's lore, many thought it would not happen to the series lead, while others believed it was all but certain to happen this time around. Sure enough, incoming head writer Chris Chibnall took on the job knowing that this is how he intended to reinvigorate the show. Armed with new writers, new directors, new producers and a new composer (godspeed, Murray Gold), Chibnall has assembled a new cast of characters to accompany the new Doctor.

Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill take to the new-look TARDIS to traverse time and space in a new series of which the finer details have been well guarded by the new production team. Chibnall is known to playing his cards very close to his chest, no less in his incredibly popular crime drama Broadchurch. His wish is for the audience to learn about what the new series holds as they're watching it and not be held to ransom by the promotional material (here's looking at you, Series 10).

This time around the series art has been bold, colorful, vibrant, optimistic-looking and wishes to convey an inclusive, accessible series which simply aims to be fun and hopefully bringing in new viewers along the way - on a new day of the week, Sunday, no less. Whether this new direction will be a success or not remains to be seen - no doubt a lot is riding on the upcoming series and how Whovians worldwide take to the Thirteenth Doctor. I look forward to finding out what is in store.
