Title: Minecraft Poll: Which version of the Minecraft should the server run?
Post by: RadioActivitii on August 13, 2017, 04:58:28 PM
Greetings! One of my first acts as division CO will be this poll, and the subsequent enaction of whatever choice is made here. This poll, as the title suggests, is about what version of Minecraft the server will run. I believe it's important a choice is made as soon as possible before more time is spent on the server. Below, I will post information about each option. Be warned however, that many of the options will require a full map reset.

The first option is Vanilla Minecraft. This is what the current server is, and it's just regular ol' Minecraft. This option won't require a map reset, and if the server is kept with this, an additional Creative Mode world will be opened alongside the current Survival world.

The second option is Feed The Beast Ultimate. Veterans of The Last Outpost may remember the old Minecraft server, which ran on a similar modpack (the Direwolf 1.4.7 pack). This pack includes a bunch of different mods across a lot of functions, however it is quite old, and it will require a map reset.

The third option is Feed The Beast Unleashed. This modpack is considered the spiritual successor to Ultimate, as well as being the "main" 1.5 Modpack. Like Ultimate, it is quite old, and it will also need a map reset.

The fourth option is the Direwolf 1.6.2 Pack. This modpack was suggested to me by Andzzy, and it shares a lot of mods with both Ultimate and Unleashed, along with a few more obscure ones. Like Ultimate and Unleashed, it will need a map reset as well. This pack may also prove unstable on our server, so that might be a concern - one that hopefully can be avoided.

The fifth option is "Vanilla+" Minecraft. There's various plugins for Bukkit that can turn the game into something really unique, such as quests, NPCs, levelling systems (https://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins), etc. This would take the longest to get operational, and also need a map reset.

If an option that requires the map to be reset is chose, some form of compensation will be added for people who played on the current incarnation to get a headstart in the new world.

This poll will run for 3 days, and it's encouraged to discuss the options in this thread!

The comp is good, but it might be an idea to offer the current world to anyone who has played on it.

Also why would Vanilla + require a map reset?

Just a note, I've not yet come across a plugin for the TLO server (or EE one for that matter) that has required me to reset the map.

What kind of plugins will require that?

Years ago when I used to help maintain a Minecraft server, when we tried to install some plugins (I think Factions or Towny was one), it led to the map getting corrupted, that might not happen, but I'd rather not get peoples hopes up in case something did go wrong.

Though I'm sure the map will have backups to restore from in the event something did go wrong.

I decided to vote for FTB 1.5 as it'd be fun to have mods to play with as well, while a reset may be needed, I think it'd give us a good chance to get something better built :)

And depending on the modpack we choose, some do have a questing book which could make it friendlier for newer players as it can help them through the first stages of using the mods.

I'm curious. How come we're not considering some of the more up to date modpacks? Looking through the FTB launcher, most are based on MC 1.10.2 or 1.7.10 these days, like FTB Beyond or even the most recent Direwolf20 pack.

They most likely won't run on the current server (which running on the same server as the website IIRC), and I think the Direwolf20 1.6.2 might be pushing the limits a tad.

If there's a demand for one of the newer modpacks, asking the cabinet for funding for a more powerful host could be an option, but for now I wanted options that would be as cheap as possible for TLO.

Feed the Beast and you won't get me off the server as I restart my quest for Minecraft industrial & magical mastery.

And with the conclusion of this poll, the results are inFeed The Beast Unleashed won with 7 votes.

I'll begin making preparations with Callum to get this set up, as well as getting the current world up for download.
