Title: All master servers are offline [RESOLVED]
Post by: SFC3 on August 02, 2013, 02:55:04 PM
Somehow between yesterday and today the masterservers went offline. None of the INTERNET tabs are working. Direct connecting works, so it's not a big hassle. I'm just wondering did they get their cords yanked or is this maintenance?

There are a couple of scenarios here:

First, and I think most likely, they're temporarily down and if we send an e-mail to Thilo he'll get them back up.

Second, they're permanently down. In this case we can look into setting up our own... but I have never done that andI have no idea what would be required.

Either way, you can always direct connect by specifying serious.last-outpost.net or rpgxef.last-outpost.net as your server.

We should probably find out what is required to host a master server. I guess some kind of polling and broadcasting application.

I found this on general Q3 master servers:

QuoteCan I run a master server?
A: Master servers can only be run with an arrangement with id Software. Usually, you will need to have a gargantuan amount of bandwidth (your 28.8k modem does not qualify) to your server, and perhaps proof that you are in a continent that does not have a master server.

Update:

I found this: http://freecode.com/projects/dpmaster

Might be worth looking into? As i understand from the read me, you just run this program and register your server's master server to the pc's ip this is running on and set the pc's ip this is running on as master server in EF. This way we could host our own master server i think. Source is included so it is possible to modify/rebuild. I think this works both on Windows and Linux or whaterver Unix/*nix/*nux servers run on these days.

I modified dpmaster a long time ago to work with EF:

Do you know what kind of resources it'd take to host one? I bet we could do it.

Ah, i didn't know that GSIO, nice one. I also didn't have a clue of dfmasters would have been compatible with EF since i have no idea of how the protocol works in EF, but yeah we should be able to use that to host our own master server then.

Would this require patching everyone RPG-XCE to add the new master server to the config?

Asking everyone to do it themselves would be an absolute nightmare

I've reached out to Thilo, and will let you all know if I hear back.

If I don't, I'll look into having our own master server more seriously. I have no idea what the requirements to do this - or the cost - would actually be.

I manage servers at a hosting company. If the decision is made to go this route, let me know and I can get something very affordable put together for ya.

Good news! Thilo is fixing the master server, it should be back up soon, if it isn't already - I just heard from him.

Did it ever come back up? Because if so, I still can't connect.  :(
