Veritas, or anyone, could you just answer me this please? Now then I don't mean to sound rude or anything I'm just wandering. What is the point of having a phaser if you can't draw it? And also why aren't you allowd to shoot/kill anyone? I know it's wrong if you just randomly do it but what if it's apart of the storyline? If a players character does get killed all they have to do is press the respawn button and it's alright. I suppose it could be wrong to kill someone off thinking about it. But what if they got accidentially killed. You know if in the plot they shoot eachother but in the RP one of them shoots too much and accidentially kills them.
Well any I'm just womdering, you know.

The simple answer is, Unless the Rp calls for it (IE CO/Admin Ok's it), Keep you phaser Holstered. This "rule" was set up because back in the day too many good Rp's were destroyed by n00bs who would run around with their Phaser out, firing randomly at anything, and anyone. It's Essentially precautionary courtesy.

In addition to what Klaw said, most COs still prefer to "RP" combat situations instead of actually having a "phaser fight", as even then a phaser situation can often get out of control, especially with a large number of people.
Not to mention that no actual Starfleet officer would carry a phaser around firing it randomly. That doesn't make any sense ;)

Let me give you a comparable example
If you were doing an RP stranded on an alien planet with no food, no supplies, no hope :O would you be running around with your coffee?

In all seriousness, yeah the phaser is there for the rare circumstances when we have things like boarding parties or other opportunities such as during the Ulysses RP three weeks ago. Generally when the phaser is used, it is used in a "shoot to miss" fashion.
Indeed, Brex sums it up quite nicely. Also, in rare occaisions you can use it as a laser i.e. you are an engineer fixing something and dont want to use just the hyperspanner, then you can use your phaser to "simulate" a welding tool or torch, shooting at a wall you are standing close to without hitting anyone. Also, i beleive that if you have a phaser in your inventory, and you equip your belt, the phaser is "mounted" to your belt, so its a visible model on your player model, not sure about this though, this is true for the tricorder.

It's very ill advised (and a little of a grey area) however there are sometimes (boarding parties) where it is used. These scenarios are usually planned well in advance though, and the outcome has usually been decided before. Another thing that happens in that situation is that no one "dies" they are only unconscious or seriously injured.
