Title: New Mac need help
Post by: Go Vikes0 on September 03, 2010, 07:12:01 AM
Hi guys, this is Vikes,

As many of you know I have RPed on RPG-X and on TLO using my old Panther Mac (operation system 10.3.9).  However, as of recently my computer has become little more than a statue of what a computer used to be in 2005 (moving to England sort of did it in).  However, I have bought a new Snow Leopard (operating system 10.6).

Good news right?

Well no, on the Panther mac I could run Classic which allowed me to RP, but Snow Leopard does not have this feature.

So, I am sending out a general SOS to ask you guys to give me any advice that would allow me to run RPG-X

In order to pre-empt the inevitable, I say this: Do not say Boot Camp as a solution, it is not, it is slow, buggy, and would make my comp a brick

Anything else is good

Thanks guys

Well, Honestly? You shouldn't have bought a Mac for gaming. They are very good at multimedia projects, but when it comes to modding/gaming/basic life, and office needs, PC's would be much better. PC's are also a lot cheaper (up to 9x as expensive, I can prove this)

Also, I looked around on the internet and I did find any mention of the two, in conjunction. did you patch it to 10.6.1?

Hah, Haddock's mean.

Boot camp is not slow or buggy. In fact, I use it exclusively, running Windows 7 with the latest drivers. Windows runs perfectly (at times faster than OS X in my experience), all my games play perfectly, and with 7 I've had only one major issue, which was quickly solved by upgrading my display drivers. I've got no idea where you heard that Bootcamp is buggy or slow, but in my experience entirely untrue: It's exactly like running Windows on any other computer.

However, if you do insist on using OS X for gaming, I recommend trying CrossOver Games (//http://www.codeweavers.com/) and installing Elite Force and RPG-X for Windows using that - it works pretty well, though it'll require some configuring, and that's what I use when I do need to use Mac OS X for any gaming. You could also try a virtual machine, like Parallels or VMWare, but those will probably be slower and less enjoyable.

Fixed the link.

I definitely recommend Bootcamp - just start Windows off with a small portion of your HD and let OS X walk you through all the steps, it's pretty straightforward.
