Title: Crash to Main Menu on Map Load - RPG-X-UE [RESOLVED]
Post by: 22123magic on July 26, 2016, 07:23:25 PM
Hi there,

I have been using RPG-X without any problems for a few years now. However, I just went to start it up today and ran into an issue. I have patched the program with the latest update.[/size]

When I go to create a server, on the loading screen, it reads "Awaiting Connection" for several seconds, before depositing me back on the main menu. I checked the console, and it says that there is a Client/Server version mismatch (2.1 and 2.3.4b) ? I find this very strange, considering I am connecting to my own server. O_o

Anyway, I tried reinstalling twice, and the same problem occurs no matter which map I try to load. However, I am able to connect to and join the TLO server just fine. Very strange. Also, an older Standard edition copy I have remains unaffected.

It should also be noted that I was not having any problems with the 2.3.4b patch before.

If anybody can help me, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :D

Hi 22123magic.  A client server mismatch normally means that you and the server have a mismatched version of RPGX and then you'd want to update both. I am assuming your trying to connect locally / create a server which is a strange error to get for local. Did you update an install or is this a fresh clean install?

Are you using the desktop shortcut generated by the installer to launch the game? Launching it through the .exe directly misses some key launch parameters that cause the RPG-X mode to load improperly. If you're not, you'll want to create one, then right-click it and go to Properties. Look for the target line, and add the bolded elements after the quotes:

"Drive:\Program Files\The Last Outpost RPG-X Ultimate Edition\rpgxEF.exe" +set fs_game RPG-X2 +set vm_game 0 +set vm_cgame 0 +set vm_ui 0

Apply this, then use this shortcut to launch the game.

Hey there, thanks for the response.  :)

[I am still having the problem using a fresh install of the latest Ultimate Edition, yes.]
EDIT: I just installed a fresh copy of the Ultimate Edition, without updates, and it will not launch. As for my updated copy, it launches from the new 2.3.4 exe, but I get the main menu mismatch crash described above. The only version I have that is working on a local server is my old 2.1 Standard Edition copy.

I agree, it's very strange that this error would occur for a local server, but not the TLO server.

Are the launch parameters still necessary when launching from the updated "rpgxEF.x86.exe" from the 2.3.4b patch?

I am going to grab a fresh copy of the standard edition, just to see if that works. Past that, I'm out of ideas. I'll update here on how it goes.

Okay, so I just did a fresh install of the newest standard edition, and it loads up just fine.

So, to sum everything up:

Standard 2.1 - WORKING
Standard 2.3 - WORKING
Ultimate 2.3 - won't start
Ultimate 2.3.4b (Patched) STARTS, but crashes to main menu on map load, with version mismatch error.

This is very strange indeed. Okay, so here's an idea: since the standard editions seem okay, is it possible to copy in all the models, maps & goodies from the Ultimate into there?

Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks, again.  :)

It should be possible just make sure they are in the correct folder. Have you tried seeing if it is an issue with the map and not the game? Also as Serris said are you launching it via the shortcut? Also the beta I have had issues in the past as well so I would use the latest version from the Downloads page. So go ahead and try copying everything I guess unless anyone else have any other suggestions and let us know how it goes.

I tried copying everything from my Ultimate BaseEF folder to the Standard BaseEF folder, but no dice. :( The program wouldn't launch.

I can confirm I am using the appropriate launch parameters in the shortcut, so I don't think that's it.

How would I go about checking if it's an issue with the maps? If it is, it seems to be affecting all of them, not just an isolated one or two.

What confuses me the most is that the problem persists with a fresh installation. I don't know what I might have done that would linger like that.

If you copied everything from your folder could it be that there is an old or outdated config file or other file that is not compatible with the newer version? And also if it is a map issue it would only be isolated to one map or two so I believe thats not it.

This is a bug in RPG-X that *might* have been fixed in the 2.4 beta.

The beta still doesn't work for me

Doesn't work at all, or this issue isn't fixed?

The Issue that I was having still isn't fixed to where I can't load any maps in the beta.

Well, I've been meaning to do a fresh windows install anyway, so whatever I did to mess it up will probably be fixed by that.

I appreciate the suggestions, though!

I think I figured out a workaround  :D  , so I thought I'd update you guys on my progress. (Who knows, someone else might experience the same thing?)

So, knowing my standard 2.1 installation still worked, and after trying several other tweaks to my broken Ultimate 2.3.4b, I was stumped. I had tried copying the Ultimate maps and resources into my Standard installation, but that only messed it up.

What I ended up doing was copying the guts of the Standard 2.1 application, into my ultimate installation. Miraculously, it worked! Granted, I am now running 2.1, but at least RPG-X is working with all the maps, again!

Hopefully my description made sense. I guess I could've just got a copy of the 2.1 Ultimate, but all's well that ends well.

------

While I'm here, I have a quick question I was hoping somebody could answer. On some maps, like the Poseidon, there is the option: "Beam to Ext location". Now, I know that this means another server, but I was wondering if someone could tell how you go about setting that up, like how the TLO servers let you transport between them, but on my own servers?

Thanks again and Keep on Trekkin'!
