Title: Ram questions [CLOSED]
Post by: Scott Archer on July 27, 2014, 06:14:35 PM
My computer can hold up to 4gb memory, it currently has two 512mb ram sticks (which as Telex keeps pointing out is barely enough to run the os let alone anything else)

It has two ram slots and can hold up to 4gb in total. (This is ddr2 desktop ram)
Can I buy one 4gb and put that in one slot and leave the other empty or will this cause issues?
It seems to be cheaper to buy 1 4gb than 2 2gb

I think 1 x 4GB will be fine.

Don't try to put anything in the other slot though. Not only will it not work, but it could cause problems with memory management

The biggest reason to avoid 1x4gb if you can is your system will not function if it goes bad in some way (the other reason would be to take advantage of dual channel, but I doubt your laptop has that capability).

Hopefully by the time that RAM goes bad, Scott has updated to a system that can handle 64 bit address spaces.

Hopefully by the time that happens, Scott will have gotten, a job, finished College, won an oscar for best director! :p (I can only hope lol)

Open your autoexec.cfg and change the line from com_hunkMegs "512" to com_hunkMegs "256".

Does it really make a difference though? I'm pretty sure those numbers refer to the virtual address space.

I thought it corresponded to the amount of RAM reserved for the game in megabytes. 256 MB would be less of a hit to his system resources than 512.

Right, but unless I'm mistaken those bytes are in EF's virtual address space as opposed to actually in physical memory.

If Scott sent com_hunkmegs to 1024 it probably wouldn't crash his system since we're talking about a virtual address space with 4GB of memory as opposed to his actual physical address space. (Scott, please don't set your hunkmegs to 1024 :P)
