Lesson B: Contributing to the plot

Contributing to the plot requires a fine sense of what plot additions are and aren't disruptive; no guide on these forums can give you that sense -- you'll have to play to really get it -- but this guide can give you the general idea.

The CO of the plot is in charge of where the story goes. Usually, a CO already knows where he/she wants the story to go when the RP starts, so remember that when you are NOT the CO, you are taking part in another person's story.

So what contributions to the plot are good and which ones are disruptive? I guess the best way to sum it up would be this way: good contributions to the plot could be hand-waived away if they stood in the way of the CO telling his/her story. For example, suddenly screaming that the warp core is going to breach is not a good contribution because a warp core breach cannot be simply dealt with in one or two lines. However, announcing a slight power fluctuation would make a good contribution because the CE could tell you to "compensate for it."

That's not to say that you can't contribute to the plot when you're not the CO. If you have an idea for a major plot shift, feel free to PM the CO and ask if he/she thinks it's a good idea. Just remember, the CO gets the final word on the plot, and you shouldn't go ahead with any larger additions without his/her approval.
