Title: [RESOLVED] Storing Signatures locally
Post by: Chris Wilkinson on July 05, 2017, 02:56:35 PM
I dunno if this is the right place to put this ^.^ but how feasible would it be to have a folder on the server for signatures and award bars at a minimum. That way we don't have them spread over a number of different sites.

I know this would eat bandwidth, but would it be a significant amount?

I wanted to check our server usage stats before I replied to this, so sorry for the delay.

From what I can tell, we currently use about 150-200GB of our 1TB bandwidth each month, so the addition of signature and award images to the site shouldn't make too much of a difference to that.

Disk space might be an issue in the future, depending on the number of images being stored, but not nothing we should worry about just yet, in fact the disk usage is only as high as it is currently as I have a few backups stored on there, including the archives used to migrate the site a couple of months ago.

This is something we could very much do if you.  I can get started on a simple image hosting section of the site today if you wanted this adding?  I do think the ability to upload should be restricted to only a few members though, maybe just like Cabinet, Elder States, President, and M&M staff?

I'd agree completely about restricting the ability to upload to a few people. In terms of M&M staff, I'd keep it restricted to people who actually create signatures or images so that people who don't need access don't have it.

I understand the delay and it wasn't bad, I'm actually glad you waited till you had figures as it gives a better picture.

To give you an idea, the signatures I've created so far are no bigger than about 150kb and award bars are no bigger than 60kb.

This isn't as bad as I thought, but it'd still be better I think to keep things local. If we can do this I'd really like to do it.

The images are a lot smaller than I thought they were, we should definately be fine then.

I will try and get you something setup within the next few days.
