Title: Daedalus
Post by: Klaw on January 29, 2018, 12:53:58 PM
Well, the time has come to show off what has been building in the shadows for a few weeks.

I stated when I closed the Daedalus SRP here, that it would come to life again, elsewhere.

I'd like to present the loose-knit community of RPG-X players who have helped bring this thing back to life.

https://www.st-daedalus.com/

Daedalus is designed to simply be simple. We're a very loose-knit group with a focus on RPG-X. However, We all posess a passion for Star Trek, and games - so I guess we can dabble a bit in some other things as time goes by.

At the moment though, this little corner of the internetz is designed to be the standalone home of Star Trek: Daedalus; a Serial Roleplay written by me, set during the Earth-Romulan war and (probably) spanning into the dawn of the Federation.

This is a completely fresh start. Very little of the story that happened during our run at TLO will be used (if anything at all.). I've designed new villains, a different backstory for the series (which we will be exploring a bit of during our miniseries Prelude to Daedalus), and I'm even building a new map.

Daedalus (the community) at it's heart, is designed to be a fun, uplifting and active RPG-X locale. I hope that we can have a nice, strong friendship with TLO, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for both communities.

Hope to see you out there.

Klaw

PS - I have no web design experience. An offer was made by a friend to do it for me, but I wanted to give it a shot to try to learn how to do this. So, if you uncover problems with the site, or have general feedback on how we can be better; Please don't hesitate to contact me.

Please also note that we're still a work in progress, there's still a lot that I'd like to see on the site, so I'm still playing with it in the background. just, be advised of that :P

I can't say I understand why this was made, but I wish you the best of luck in your adventures.

Firstly, thank you for your reply.

The short version of it is this: RPG-X as a whole needs a nice shot of life in the arm. I can't guarantee that Daedalus will be able to offer that, but I wanted an opportunity to try.

I was already playing with the idea of setting up a Daedalus website anyway. The idea was originally intended to serve as an augment to the series to help improve the overall experience. It became apparent as time went on that it would be a huge missed opportunity to not try to make RPG-X better, and help advertise and organize the community at large.

I hope that RPG-X communities, such as TLO, can have a constructive relationship with one another, and further the purpose of the game: giving people a chance to tell their stories and enjoy the story telling of others.

This is the dream, and this is the purpose behind Daedalus.

It's good to see some opportunities to rebuild the RPG-X community beyond just TLO. Best of luck to you in this endeavor :)

Thank you, Jenson. I hope we can get things active enough to help draw you out of your semi-retirement :P :D

Firstly, I apologize for the double post. I usually try to avoid those when possible.

However, I did want to bump this and share a little more detail about what we're trying to do.

Part of the reason why the Daedalus community exists is to allow me the freedom to try to do something ambitious.

RPG-X is well over 10 years old. There are a number of people within the Greater RPG-X Community (GRC) that believe it's hit it's peak, it'll never grow again, and it's on it's way to death.

The same things has been said about countless other games, that I see played by hundreds, if not thousands, every day.

In my home town, there are very successful shops, where retro games are sold (That's their entire business model). Games such as minecraft are living proof that content matters more than graphics. From the view of the world that I'm seeing, RPG-X has a place in modern gaming.

Better still, it's freely available, thanks to all in one installers that have been created with permission from Raven, and CBS/Paramount and freely distributed by surviving RPG-X groups.

The key issue with RPG-X today; is a lack of content creators, and a lack of a central community.

I can count on one hand the number of map makers I know are still around. Me, Motoko (Sparky - who is only seemingly semi-active), Griffin Endurance (or so I assume) and Martin Thompson (who, is supposedly semi-retired).

I can't think of a single model maker, maybe Serris? Though he's not actively making new models (to my knowledge)

The point is - nobody is trying to make new content, probably for various reasons. But if the time were taken to learn how to do this, the community would have a new generation of content creators at their disposal, and new life could rise as a result.

The next problem though, is a lack of a central hub.

In the old days, we had effiles and ubergames to share content, ask questions, and generally act as a hub for knowledge for RPG-X. Using ubergames, you could find which RPG-X group was created this week, and decide whether or not you wanted to take part.

Today, you have to google it, and hope they're active. In short, RPG-X players are scattered because we lost our promised land. I would love to see ubergames come back to life, and become that hub again - but until it does, I hope that this can serve that purpose, temporarily.

Daedalus is simply a passion of mine. I'm using it as a platform to A. Tell my story and B. try to rebuild and support RPG-X. I hope other communities can consider this neutral ground - a place to meet and share Community Building initiatives, to advertise community events, and to ultimately help the lonely RPG-X players out there realize that they are not alone, and help them find a home.

I would love for TLO to join us on this journey.
