Title: Setting up VR with RPG-X on Windows
Post by: Arron Dominion on May 20, 2017, 10:51:55 PM
Hello everyone,

I decided to buy a program to use with my HTC Vive in the hopes of emulating VR capability in non-VR games.  The program had support for Elite Force, so I decided to try it out with RPG-X.  It works really well with RPG-X with full head tracking.

---------------------------------------------------

If you want to reproduce the environment yourself here is what you will need:
-Windows 7 or higher
-A VR Headset - Either Occulus or HTC Vive (I only have a Vive)
-RPG-X
-vorpX  http://www.vorpx.com/ (http://www.vorpx.com/)

----------------------------------------------

Steps you need to do:

1)  Setup your VR Headset if you have not already

2)  Ensure you have RPG-X installed

3)  Install vorpX

4)  Configure vorpX, and duplicate the Local Profile for Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force and name it something related to RPG-X

5)  Point the Local Profile for RPG-X to the RPG-X .exe

6) Launch your game

-----------------------------------------------

vorpX automatically kicks in if you have it set to Watching, and have defined a rule for the game you are wanting to use with VR.

Here are a few screenshots:

One thing to note is that the UI adapts to where you are looking, and it might be a little more difficult to select dialogue windows.  There is a tendency for the VR experience to look in weird spots, but can be corrected with external controls (used the Vive controllers in my case)

This was the first thing I had to do with vorpX. It was quite the thing.

That is quite awesome! Makes me want to invest in a VR headset. Mostly because I want to see 20 Peldari/Kulhane's jumping around on the bridge.

I was using the controllers in game.  I am not sure how to bring up the keyboard for interacting in a multiplayer environment for responding in chat.  It was pretty cool to coordinate with the two controllers.

Thank you for the tip!  :)
Finally got my hands on a VR-headset myself so I had to try it. Very cool!  :D*
My VR-headset is a "Windows Mixed Reality by HP" headset and it works fine using VorpX. I just followed Arron's steps above and it worked.
VorpX doesn't officialy support anything other than Oculus Rift and HTC Vive at this time so it was a gamble that paid off for me. :D

TIP: Make sure to set the in-game video and screen resolution options before you launch the game in VR-mode since it won't save your changes if you do them while in VR mode. (I selected 4:3 1280x1024) I also maxed the FOV using VorpX's ingame menu (press DELETE) to reduce "fish-eye".
