Federation Interiors Redesign

Star Trek Online Season 8 STO MMORPG F2P Sci-Fi MMO Game Legacy of Romulus

Hi Captains!

Jeff "LCDRMiller" Miller here to talk about the new Federation ship interior featured in the upcoming, revamped Federation tutorial. I won't lie; I had wanted to do a revamp of the Federation hallways almost since I started on the Star Trek Online team. So when I was asked if I wanted to tackle this project I was really excited. Finally, a chance to create an interior that is dynamic and of course, has curved halls!

Interior Halls

Let's talk about the interior hallways first. We wanted to be sure to tackle the things our community has been asking for, for a while now. We took time to sift through our forums and pick out the ideas and hopes that you all want to see in a new Federation interior. The ideas and suggestions we came across all seemed to point towards two things: 1) Dynamic hallways, and 2) A smaller, more compact feel. I am pleased to tell you all that the new design caters to both of these aspects, while not losing the required specs for combat gameplay. And yes, the elusive curved hallways made it in too!!

Although it seems to be a pretty simple task, a lot of gameplay factors arise when creating hallways that will be used for combat as well as leisure. We did not want the player to feel like they have no room to move around in whilst in combat. With this in mind, we were able to bring in the height and some width to make it feel a bit more compact.

As you may notice, the halls are dynamic and were built in sections that can easily be swapped out with other things. For example, if a mission calls for the player to be in a more engineering type deck, we can very easily swap out a paneled wall section with piping. Another example would be what we like to call 'special situations'. A special situation would be like if a mission required a sudden explosion to occur and an entire section gets blasted out into space. The way the new hall kits are made let us do cool new things like this a lot easier.

Hallway Design

When it came down to the question of look and feel, we had a pretty clear vision on what we wanted. We knew that we didn't want it to match the 2409 design of the Odyssey Bridge, but needed it to feel like this new design was the basis of what the 2409 would eventually become. So our first stop was to study all the design cues that made the 2409 interiors 2409. Sleek, curvy and clean are the main elements pulled from the 2409 design. We also wanted to pull in design elements from LCARS into the architecture itself. We also took the time to study some of the design sketches (as exampled above) on how the original Sovereign hallways where built for the television show.

Origin Bridge

Star Trek Online Season 8 STO MMORPG F2P Sci-Fi MMO Game Legacy of Romulus

The new Federation Bridge, Origin, was really awesome to create. It needed to fit with the same style and follow the same design elements as the new hallways. It also needed to be the stepping stone bridge that would eventually lead to the Odyssey 2409 bridge. We pulled the sleek and curved structure design from the 2409 style into the new bridge, but also keeping in mind to keep an older era feel as well. We pulled many things design wise from older generations of bridges. Looking at how the seating was arranged, stations were designed and the final touches were added, including a bit of asymmetry. Overall, we feel that the design of the new Origin Bridge hits all the points we set out to hit. We really believe you all will love the new design.

It has been a blast creating these new interiors. The amount of flexibility the new halls bring to the table open up many possible doors for future gameplay and experiences. We cannot wait for you all to see it shine in the new Federation tutorial launching with Season 8!

We are also excited to announce that the Origins Bridge will be the new default bridge for all Federation ships! So close the shuttle bay doors, and punch it to warp 9 in style!

Live long and prosper,

This is yet another awesome report on Season 8 team. The hallway designs are much more true to the overall Star Trek feel. New bridge design upgrades are awesome.... Wonder if Cryptic will eventually add interactive consoles much how it is in RPG-X.  8) Thank you Dendo for this great update sourced from Cryptic.  @_@

And a star to steer her by...

With Legacy of Romulus, it was required that we create a new tutorial for the Romulan faction. We also wanted to make good on the promise of full Klingon content as well, which required that a tutorial be made for them. After we released Legacy of Romulus, we realized that both those tutorials were superior to what we had done in the past, leaving the current Federation tutorial a distant third when it comes to new starting experiences in Star Trek Online.

This obviously wouldn't do, so we scheduled time to create a brand new starting experience for Federation characters, building upon what we learned from creating the Romulan and Klingon early-level experiences. We hashed out what a starting experience for Federation players should be like, and took inspiration from the movies, as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country all featured brand new crews. Some even had crews of cadets being thrust into action on their very first mission. This was what we wanted to emulate as your first Star Trek experience.

Of course, when Star Trek Online was first released, we didn't have Starfleet Academy in the game, but now that map is available to us. This made it obvious to everyone that the player should start in SFA, as a Cadet getting their first Training Cruise assignment. We were also able to use the Class of 2409 as your background characters, named "extras" who would pop up throughout the first few missions, giving a real sense of crew and camaraderie before your character has had a chance to fill out their Bridge Officer slots.

One of these extras got a "starring role" as it were. Cadet Elisa Flores was created to become your first Bridge Officer, one with which you've shared some history. Flores has a real spunky personality that blends well with lots of players' interpretations of how they want their characters to react to the world. She is your first real buddy that you encounter at Starfleet Academy and she even helps you get your current position on the ship. At first, you might think that she never takes things seriously. But when the stakes are high, you realize that she has a tendency to use comedy as a defense mechanism. As the tutorial progresses, her character evolves even further. When she gets deadly serious, you know that the odds are truly stacked against you.

When devising the story for the tutorial, we had a couple of objectives in mind. All throughout the game, there is mention of the Borg attack on the Vega colony. It's built into characters' backgrounds, into mission briefings and even has a Special Task Force that involves it. As such, this was STO canon and could not be changed. What we could do was expand upon it and give you an even deeper and meaningful role in the effort to save whomever you could from Vega.

The other objective was to establish the Klingon Front, since the first act of the Federation missions revolve around the Klingon-Federation War. We did this by introducing the character of Captain Kadek of the I.K.S. Chot. He has taken his Negh'Var deep into Federation territory to engage in a bit of piracy and marauding, luring unsuspecting vessels into a trap. Even though the player seems to get the upper hand on Captain Kadek before the space portion of the tutorial, the cloaked Klingon does his best to taunt you at every turn as you try to repair your ship and send out a distress call. These taunts make your eventual victory over Captain Kadek all the sweeter.

Star Trek Online Season 8 STO MMORPG F2P Sci-Fi MMO Game Legacy of Romulus

One thing that risked being left on the wayside was the work that Zachary Quinto did as the Emergency Medical Hologram for the original Star Trek Online Tutorial. We devised a way to work in the U.S.S. Khitomer into the story, and then looked at all the lines that Quinto had recorded for us. We were able to use several of his recorded lines in new dialog options. Players who have experienced the original tutorial will likely recognize lines being delivered in response to different actions by the player. New players will be none-the-wiser, and should simply be pleased with getting to interact with Quinto's take on a 25th century EMH.

By the end of the tutorial you will once again find yourself face-to-face with Admiral Quinn, explaining your actions as acting Captain of your ship. This time, however, you will have a wealth of experience under your belt and even a full away team of Bridge Officers comprised mainly of characters you met and interacted with at Starfleet Academy and aboard the ship itself.

Star Trek Online Season 8 STO MMORPG F2P Sci-Fi MMO Game Legacy of Romulus

All in all, the new Federation starting experience is leaps and bounds better than what was there previously. It feels more "Star Trek" as well, taking its cues from various episodes dealing with Academy life as well as movies and episodes where Cadets are thrust unceremoniously into action on their first training cruise. Eventually the player will be able to take their own seat in the Captain's chair and issue the order to "Engage!"

We are also happy to announce that existing Federation captains will be able to invite Elisa Flores to join their crew by speaking with the contact at Starfleet Academy near Lt. Ferra.

See you in-game next week for Season 8!

The Voth Lock Box

Voth Bastion Flight-Deck Cruiser
(https://last-outpost.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages-cdn.perfectworld.com%2Fwww%2F9e%2F62%2F9e625ddb495abad92c915e57db19a8c41384203866.jpg&hash=318c3365e8c701d85fc1bf533f3d24c6118ae00c)

The Voth are an ancient species which appear to have evolved from the Hadrosaur species that roamed Earth in the time of dinosaurs. If this origin is to be believed, then they long ago escaped the extinction events that wiped out other species on Earth by developing spaceflight and travelling to the distant reaches of the Delta Quadrant. When encountered by the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager, the Voth became curious about humans and Earth, but ultimately remained steadfast in their belief in their Doctrine, which states that they are the first intelligent species to have evolved and that they are native to the Delta Quadrant.

Although Voyager's tense encounter with the Voth ended without bloodshed, the species has recently clashed with the powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants over control of the Solanae Dyson Sphere. The sphere is an unfathomably powerful structure, and contains countless Omega particle generators that power the mysterious alien megalith, but whose ultimate function remains a mystery. While the Voth Doctrine dictates that it is their right to control the sphere, the combined forces of the Federation, the Romulan Republic and the Klingon Empire have vowed to neutralize the danger presented by the Omega particles. With these great empires unable to find a common ground for negotiations, armed clashes now rage across the interior of the sphere and beyond.

Reactive Shield Amplifier

What if Humans weren't the first intelligent species to evolve on Planet Earth? This is the question that is explored in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Distant Origin," with the alien species – the Voth – exhibiting multiple biological similarities with forms of life that developed in the Alpha Quadrant millions of years in the past. The question isn't definitively resolved in the episode. But that's exactly what Star Trek fans love – unanswered questions and exploring new theoretical possibilities of what the future might reveal to humanity.

When designing the Voth for Star Trek Online, we chose to explore the questions of their origins, their dedication to Doctrine, and what it might mean for a civilization to last millions of years as a starfaring species. Over these vast periods of time, Voth scientists would have had ample opportunity to delve into areas of scientific knowledge that modern humanity can't even dream of yet. And yet, restricted by their adherence to Doctrine, their potential for discovering and embracing new concepts has been hampered almost to the point of stagnation. Nonetheless, the need for a defensive military force in a hostile galaxy has driven their research into cybernetics, bio-engineering and the construction of megalithic ships that dwarf the scale of those seen anywhere else.

In Season 8: The Sphere, players will find themselves plunged into conflict with these ancient beings, over the presence of the dangerous and awe-inspiring Omega molecules found within the Solanae Dyson Sphere. While it is the duty of the Alpha Quadrant forces to dismantle the generators creating and storing these devastating particles, the Voth believe they are the rightful owners of the sphere's technology, and advanced enough to control and utilize the power of Omega found within.

Voth Heavy Fighters

What better way to defeat such a technologically advanced enemy, than to turn their own arsenal against them? Players fortunate enough to obtain the Voth Bastion Flight-Deck Cruiser will be given the opportunity to do just that. This massive Cruiser boasts both heavy offensive and defensive capabilities, while simultaneously fielding a hangar of Voth Heavy Fighters at their command, and making use of the same array of Cruiser Commands available to all Flight-Deck Cruisers. This powerful vessel will be the grand prize available with the Voth Lock Box.

The Voth Bastion Flight-Deck Cruiser also comes equipped with the Reactive Shield Amplifier console. Activating this console grants the vessel complete immunity to incoming damage from all sources for a limited amount of time, while simultaneously reflecting this damage back at attackers that fire upon the shield. This shield is not completely impervious however, and can be dismantled before its duration is complete if the user is hit with enough damage (up to 100,000 total damage is negated and reflected, before the shield dissipates).

Voth Palisade Science Vessel

Also available from the Lobi Crystal Store is the Voth Palisade Science Vessel. Although the smallest of the Voth's starship line-up, this vessel still packs a punch through its use of debilitating science abilities and its stalwart construction can withstand heavy bouts of incoming fire. Being a "true" Science Vessel, this starship comes equipped with Sensor Analysis and Subsystem Targeting.

Palisade Science Vessels come equipped with an Aceton Field Generator console. Activating this console shifts the Voth vessel into an absorption mode that drains subsystem energy from nearby ships while also building up Aceton Charge based on the amount of incoming fire the ship is under. As the Aceton Charge builds up, the ship becomes more and more resistant to incoming Energy Damage. Aceton Charge can be released at any time to send out a massive wave of radiation damage which becomes more devastating the more charge the ship has built up.

Equipping both the Reactive Shield Amplifier and Aceton Field Generator on the same Voth starship will passively increase its damage resistance from all sources, and allow it to utilize Voth Cloak – an out-of-combat stealth ability which incorporates a massive increase in damage resistance.

Aceton Field Generator

Additional vessels will be available within the Voth Lock Box, in the form of Mirror Universe Starships. For this box, players will see the return of the selection previously contained within the Dominion Lock Box.

Federation Captains:

Mirror Universe Patrol Escort
Mirror Universe Advanced Escort
Klingon Empire Captains:

Mirror Universe Vo'Quv Carrier
Romulan Republic Captains:

Mirror Universe Ha'feh Assault Warbird

As was seen in the previous Lock Box, the Voth Lock Box will include an entirely new Universal Console. This console can be fitted on any vessel of any faction. In keeping with the theme of Voth technology, this new Universal Console utilizes the Spatial Charge Launchers which can be seen used by the Voth Citadel Dreadnoughts that players will come in conflict with in Season 8.

(https://last-outpost.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages-cdn.perfectworld.com%2Fwww%2F4b%2Fc8%2F4bc8f44ace617f22b4ac2b51a882217b1384203951.jpg&hash=937e8224573f6dc46004980972481d065a62ec74)
Spatial Charge Launchers

Activating the Spatial Charge Launchers console will initiate a barrage of spatial charges to be sent at the enemy target. Each spatial charge will target the location of this enemy, fly toward that location, and detonate in a large and powerful blast. Fast-moving ships may be able to avoid these blasts, but each individual charge will be devastating if not avoided.

The new series of Genetic Resequencers found within the Voth Lock Box are all specifically designed to enhance an ability that is unique to each player profession. Instead of each Trait being contained within its own package, there are only two packages – one for Ground and one for Space. Captains that open either will be rewarded with a Trait Unlock that is matched to their Profession (Engineering, Science or Tactical).

Ground Traits available will be:

Orbital Devastation – Engineering
You have mastered coordination between ground and space targeting parameters allows you to utilize adaptive targeting algorithms when striking from orbit.

Your Orbital Strike is replaced with Orbital Chasing Beam.
Orbital Chasing Beam will follow nearby enemies for a few seconds after striking, and deal periodic continuous damage instead of being a single instant strike.
Subspace Manipulator – Science
Your expert knowledge of localized subspace manipulation allows you to enhance your Dampening Field with additional debilitating effects.

Your Dampening Field inflicts the following additional effects on enemies within its radius:
Decreased Run Speed
Decreased Perception
Tactical Vigilance – Tactical
Your heightened sense of tactics allows you to convey additional positioning benefits upon yourself and your entire team.

While under the effects of Tactical Initiative, you and all teammates become immune to Flanking.

Space Traits available will be:

Fleet Technician – Engineering
Your engineering expertise allows you to convey additional hull repairs for any teammates that are affected by your Engineering Fleet ability.

Adds a Hull Heal-Over-Time effect to teammates affected by your Engineering Fleet ability.
Fleet Physicist – Science
Your scientific experience allows you to convey a shield regeneration effect on teammates affected by your Science Fleet ability.

Adds a Shield Heal-Over-Time effect to teammates affected by your Science Fleet ability.
Fleet Tactician – Tactical
Your tactical expertise allows you to coordinate team-wide attack patterns, conveying additional maneuverability bonuses to teammates affected by your Tactical Fleet ability.

Adds Flight Speed, Turn Rate and a temporary Immunity to Slow to all teammates affected by your Tactical Fleet ability.

Not every member of the Voth species is entirely pleased with the militant adherence to Doctrine their brethren have displayed in recent times. Many enlightened Voth have chosen instead to embrace the Distant Origin Theory, and reach out to their distant relatives from the Alpha Quadrant. These free-thinking Voth are willing to offer their services as highly-skilled Duty Officers aboard your vessel. Each Voth Separatist Duty Officer is of Very Rare quality and possesses the unique "Free-Thinker" Trait, which improves their efficiency with performing Duty Officer Assignments within the Solanae Dyson Sphere. Each officer also offers a new unique Active Roster Ability, if placed on Active Duty.

The Voth Antiproton Shocktrooper Cannon has primary and secondary firing modes which unleash hails of antiproton projectiles on nearby enemies, similar to those seen by the aforementioned Exosuits. Additionally, this weapon comes with a unique tertiary firing mode that replaces the typical melee attack of other weapons with a point-blank EMP Burst attack which can knock back all nearby enemies while dealing damage to their shields. While it has a longer cooldown than the typical melee attack, it packs quite a punch!

Raptor Hatchling Companion Pet (Non-Combat)

During recent explorations led by Dyson Joint Command, a clutch of Raptor Hatchlings was rescued from a Voth hatchery discovered within one of the spires that dot the inner surface of the Solanae Dyson Sphere. Although Voth frequently train these creatures for combat, they don't seem to be specifically bred for such a purpose, and are wonderfully docile and loyal companions at birth. Their inquisitive nature and heightened intelligence make them easily domesticated. These vanity pets can be purchased in a pack which will randomly reward one of the eight (8) different breeds that are available, each with unique colorful markings.

Transwarp Coil Consumables, which up until now have only been available from the Dilithium Store, are also being made available in the Lobi Crystal Store. Players will be able to purchase them in packs of 2 or 10. Each Transwarp Coil is capable of sending players to the far reaches of the galaxy at a moment's notice, with a relatively short cooldown, but is consumed after a single use.

The Voth Lock Box, as well as these thematic additions to the Lobi Crystal Store, will become available starting tomorrow, November 12, 2013, at approximately 10:00am PST.
