The Last Outpost

No longer able to guarantee long-term support from Starbase 215, Pioneer looks to become more self-sufficient than ever as the ramifications of Mason's stance begin to set in. As the re-energized Captain and Jemma Etis wrestle with a ghost from Pioneer's past, a new arrival in the crowded sector docks with the station under the pretence of bartering. However, this group of shady visitors is looking to settle unfinished business with the returning Ferengi barkeep. With only outside aid from the rest of the staff, Alicia Costello finds herself the lone protector of the station resident she may just despise the most as the pair are tracked on a deck under siege by assailants that Barnes makes every attempt to call off. Selling Pioneer as a safe haven may just take longer than expected.

I am most definitely looking forward to this episode. I wouldn't be so sure if Gaila should be.

A Promenade-Under-Siege episode has been on the cards since the first season, but I could never bring myself to put it together. Logistically, it's a terrible idea. There's only so far my delusions of grandeur can take us and at the end of the day - we're still running around on a video game map and not a television set. The Promenade of Vanderbilt is of a T-shaped design with a single upper level square. Putting two characters on that deck while trying to evade capture - and making it both plausible and fun - it's going to be quite difficult. Of course there are going to be set pieces. Costello and Gaila will be holding up in the bar, various stores and using their surroundings to their advantage - but to be honest I had to decide on the balance. More than anything, the focus will be on these two adversarial characters trying to survive and learning more about each other on the way - just as every Star Trek series has done before it.

Now, with the Promenade locked down, there was the matter of what everybody else would be doing. Originally, those not on the Promenade would be working to resolve the situation as it continues to escalate. They would be there as outside problem solvers for Costello. But I turned my back on this idea. It would defeat the object of putting the focus on the unlikely pairing. It would defeat the object of having that under-siege feel. Many members would miss out on what was actually happening down below. So instead, I have made a potentially controversial decision. For the duration of the siege, everyone will playing characters down on the Promenade.

While it will come down to who is in attendance, members will be divided up between the would-be assassins, store owners (with Professor Fox - should Talus be with us) and other station visitors & junior officers. This Costello centric episode will see the Chief of Security attempt to protect this rather ragtag group. Taking in to account scenes on either side of the siege, there is still approximately 40 minutes of time to spend with your regular characters - while also catching up on the Mason/Etis/Pierce/Mystery Voice saga.
