The Amarante rendezvoused with Voyager outside the Jenolan Dyson Sphere in the Delta Quadrant. Admiral Tuvok then transported aboard the ship to give the ship its mission briefing -- a five-year mission of exploration circumnavigating the galactic rim, ending at Starbase 234 in the Beta Quadrant. Unfortunately, because Starfleet's resources are stretched so thin, the Amarante is the only ship being dispatched on this assignment. To increase their chances of survival, the Admiral assigned an expert in Delta Quadrant anthropology and sociology, Commander Aeyrn Zandeur, as the ship's new first officer.
Eager to get underway, the ship embarks upon its assigned course at slipstream, only to encounter erratic systems behavior uncharacteristic of the now-perfected technology. Shortly after, the ship makes first contact with a new subspace-dwelling cosmozoan organism that pulls the ship out of slipstream and attacks it. With little recourse but to defend themselves, the Amarante successfully drives the organism back into subspace and continues along its course.
I felt that it was a little slow getting started and the pace seemed a little off.
The story arcs involved within the episode were strong and it was nice to have a little time to get to know our characters a little more. Overall, not a bad episode but could easily have run in 1.5 hours rather than 2.5.
I really liked the episode, and the off duty ending to that RP!
All I have to say is that it was an excellent episode even though I wasn't there the entire time, I really enjoyed my time there. Looking forward to the next episode.
