Announcements / A Year to Remember
November 22, 2020, 05:48:23 pm
2020 has been a tremendous year, for better or worse. Together, we've all faced unimaginable personal and professional disruptions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that have tested our resolve. This community is no exception to the bleak state of affairs, not just this year, but over the last few years. The Last Outpost closed out the last decade with a tumultuous cycle in leadership and a lack of direction. Our personal struggles have only served to pull our attention away from our community and make this worse, especially as of late.

Look to the world around us. In America alone, despite uncontrolled case numbers, there are now two promising candidates for vaccination against COVID-19. Even in darkness, there is hope. I feel your frustrations with our stagnation and lack of direction, and those frustrations now have a voice and substantial influence in shaping this community. There is hope for The Last Outpost's future. Still, despite my overwhelming urge to hit the ground running with sweeping reforms, if this year has taught us anything, it's that it is a time to be careful and considerate. I will be holding a Cabinet Meeting after the American Thanksgiving holiday in early December to confer with my colleagues in the Cabinet and the membership, get an assessment of the current state of affairs, and make decisions accordingly.

Scheduling pending, I invite you all to join me in this meeting, and lay the foundation for a better future for The Last Outpost. My private messages on the forum and on our Discord are open. Please do not hesitate to come to me with your feedback, your ideas, and your visions for this community. I want to encourage a more open, constructive dialogue and camaraderie within our community. Every input counts, now more than ever.

Hey, everyone!

The Last Outpost was founded on July 10th, 2010. That means as of July 10th, 2020, we're officially one decade strong! As the date is rapidly approaching, let's celebrate this milestone and our spirit of community. If you have an idea for an event that doesn't overlap with anything on our schedule, send me a personal message here or on Discord and I'll add it to our itinerary!

It's been over two years since the last update to our Holomatch clients, but that doesn't mean we've given up support! As a matter of fact, we've expanded our support to include Linux operating systems with an experimental client, and updated our Windows clients with a new engine fork. Because of the extensive changes, we recommend uninstalling your existing client and replacing it with this one.

When The Last Outpost launched our Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force client as "Holomatch, refined," that wasn't just a fancy, branded image. "Holomatch, refined" is a standard, a commitment from us to deliver the best package possible for end users. We want this download to be worth your time and bandwidth, especially in this day and age where data caps are becoming more and more common. To that end, we continue to curate and add content, and make changes to improve the overall game experience.

Do you have suggestions for content or tweaks that would improve your experience? We welcome it! Just register here on our forums and head over to the Feature Requests board with your feedback. Reports of bugs, map exploits, and unintended game behavior should be directed to our Engineering board. If you are a creator of one or more modifications included in this client and would like to request that we remove and/or stop distributing your work, please post in the Engineering board. We do our best to properly attribute maps and models to their respective creators in our Mod Licenses folder, but no one's perfect!

Patch Notes:

•   Engine changed to a fork of cMod by Noah "Chomenor" Metzger.
            •   Linux operating system support added.
            •   IPv6 networking support added.
            •   HTTPS and FTP/FTPS server file transfer protocol support added in-engine.
            •   Demo .AVI video export support added.
            •   Screenshots now support .PNG file format.
            •   Configuration changes now load from cmod.cfg in the game install folder, rather than hm_config.cfg in AppData.
            •   Console history is now persistent across multiple game sessions.
            •   Server admins may now spectate players remotely without joining to observe and respond to cheaters.
            •   Numerous engine optimizations and bug fixes.
                   •    Full documentation regarding engine changes is available here.

•   Master servers Internet1, Internet2, and Internet3 are now functional, allowing players to join multiplayer games from the menu.
            •   Dedicated server owners and operators should update their server configurations to refer to the following master servers:
                   •    master.stvef.org
                   •    efmaster.tjps.eu
                   •    master.stef1.daggolin.de

•   The game will now default to native full screen desktop display resolution on initial start-up.
            •   Menus will appear stretched, but function normally.

Known Issues:

•   No official support for macOS operating systems. A macOS client is currently being researched.
            •   In the meantime, the Windows client has been tested and confirmed to work on WINE.

•   Linux client may require SDL2 and other library dependencies to be downloaded and installed before the game can be played.
            •   This is an experimental, untested portable client and we very much welcome feedback from Linux users.

•   No in-game options for display 4:3 resolutions above 2048x1536 and 16:9 resolutions above 856x480.
•   No in-game options for 3:2 and 21:9 aspect ratios.
            •   Native full screen monitor resolution can be set by using /r_fullscreenMode "-2" and /vid_restart.
            •   Windowed mode can be set by using /r_fullscreen "0".
            •   Windowed mode resolution is set by setting /r_customwidth and /r_customheight to your desired window size.
                   •    For example, you would type /r_customwidth "1920";r_customheight "1080" in console for 1080p displays.
                   •    If none of your changes are taking effect, try /vid_restart.

•   No in-game options for anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering.
            •   These must be set manually via your graphics card's control panel.

•   Optional "initiating program" fade-in on server join doesn't use updated, wider field of view.
            •   A fix for this is currently being researched.

•   Users may encounter problems joining servers due to a "bad CD key" error.
            •   This occurs because some servers still use the original game client, which has the CD key check enabled.
                   •    This cannot be fixed without a valid CD key.

•   The in-game model list doesn't include all of the player models and skins present in BaseEF.
            •   This is the result of an engine limitation with how many models the menu can display. We are researching possible fixes.

RPG-X / "To Boldly Roll" - The Skill System Companion
September 08, 2019, 05:00:00 pm
On September 15th, 2000, Raven Software released Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force to positive reviews. The game was a love letter to Star Trek fans, featuring authentic series locales with meticulous attention to detail, rock solid first-person gameplay, and a story that felt ripped right out of the show.

Raven released tools to modify the game shortly after, allowing players to create their own custom content. Some players were enamored by the idea of telling their own Star Trek story within the engine. While most focused on delivering scripted single-player experiences to replace the main game's campaign, an intrepid team of developers named Ubergames set out to turn the game's frantic, Quake-like arena multiplayer into a sandbox tool set that would enable generations of Star Trek fans to come together and share their stories with one another.

Four years after the initial launch of Elite Force, Ubergames released RPG-X, and it took the Elite Force community by storm. Several dedicated forum groups were born, with game servers sprouting up left and right. Content creators leapt on the opportunity, creating impressively detailed interactive environments for players to use. It was a renaissance in online Star Trek roleplaying, being the first game to allow players to transcend forums and interact with each other and their ships in real time.

What it lacked, however, was the ability for characters to quantify their skills. Today, that has changed.

Introducing, Star Trek: RPG-X - The Official Skill System Companion "To Boldly Roll" Edition. The Skill System Companion is a basic D20 RPG system of original design, tailored specifically for Star Trek and accessibility, with several different race modules available for Game Masters to reference when creating their campaigns. It's designed to supplement that niche of character creation, whether with the game or by itself as its own experience.

Unfortunately, due to detrimental real-life issues and attendance problems, the Shared Universe project is officially terminated as of July 22nd, 2018. Grizz and I would like to thank those of you that took the time to participate in our experiment. Hopefully, some day, this idea can be revived and executed even better than what we attempted here.

Season One / Episode One: "Infinity's Prism"
May 21, 2018, 05:49:06 pm

The recent theft of infinitum ore from Station Asteria has put the F.C.S. Endurance crew in a precarious position. What was once a simple and reliable source of income has quickly become a potentially hazardous endeavor. While the captain and the Federation Cargo Service Authority weigh the situation and ponder the fate of their contract with the Federation Science Council, the ship ferries new officers transferring to Asteria, right towards an increasingly active border with the Romulan Star Empire.

This episode will take place on June 10th, 2018 at 1:00 PM EDT / 6:00 PM UTC on The Last Outpost's London RPG-X server.

Unhappy with Starfleet's ability to respond to incidents of ships in distress following the Dominion War, the Federation Cargo Service decided to go back to the drawing board and commissioned the Utopia Planitia Shipyards to develop a vessel capable of transporting thousands of tons of ore quickly across vast distances, with the added benefit of not being completely helpless in a fight. The result is the F.C.S. Endurance, the first ship of its class. With new warp field amplifier technology increasing its loaded maximum speed dramatically, ablative monotanium hull armor defending its holds, and armaments comparable to a Sabre-class starship, the Endurance is the most formidable and efficient freighter in the quadrant, crewed by the best and brightest freight haulers the Federation has to offer.

This is one side of a story of two halves. A look into how the politics of the Federation and its military actions affect the honest, working people outside of council chambers and captain's chairs, helmed by the man behind Star Trek: The Lost Era and Star Trek: Full Circle.

The Endurance has been contracted by Starfleet Sciences to haul ore samples, supplies, and commodities back and forth between its new research station Asteria and Deep Space Nine. For the first six months of the operation, things have been going smoothly. New friendships have formed, an amicable working relationship has been established... but a recent theft of ore from the station's holds changed everything.

Now, Starfleet has taken a greater interest in the area. Old tensions from the Dominion War, thought to be forgotten, are inflamed by new, cumbersome security measures. Meanwhile, across the Neutral Zone, a situation seems to be brewing that could have galaxy-wide ramifications, and the crew of the Endurance may be caught in the crossfire.

Star Trek: RPG-X Ultimate Edition may be a monolithic mass of mods, but out of respect for the conditions GriffinEndurance has established for legal redistribution of his work, we do not distribute his maps and models with our clients. Additionally, depending on player requests, additional skin files and map files may be needed. This thread will be updated accordingly.

Maps:

•   Asteria Pack by GriffinEndurance

Models:

Because Endurance is a civilian cargo ship that doesn't possess a rigid command structure like a Starfleet vessel would, any character could fill multiple positions. As such, the only strictly defined positions of authority aboard the ship are captain, first officer, and chief engineer.

Feel free to post your application below! We'll be using the engineering jumpsuit uniforms from the Asteria pack, but if you'd like to use a model that doesn't have access to that uniform, I'll be happy to fix that for you.

And remember, we're using the new Star Trek: RPG-X Skill System, so you'll need to prepare a skill sheet with your application. An example of a finished skill sheet can be found here.

Here's the format we're looking for. X indicates an area where you fill in the variables.

What is the Star Trek: RPG-X Pen & Paper Companion Skill System?

Developed by Serris, the Star Trek: RPG-X Pen & Paper Companion Skill System is a new traditional roleplaying game designed to compliment the direct action-oriented style of player interaction in RPG-X. Similar to Dungeons & Dragons, the Star Trek: RPG-X Skill System provides a framework for players to quantify their character's abilities, as well as add a more dynamic, random element to their interactions with the world around them.

A print-friendly version of the first edition is available here.

What does this mean for The Last Outpost's Shared Universe?

Asteria and Endurance will be the first series to use the RPG-X Skill System to facilitate events and define the consequences for characters' actions, hoping to provide a more dynamic storytelling experience. Players who apply for either series will be required to fill out a skill sheet for their character. Andzzy has created a spreadsheet template that will help you do most of the work, though you may still need to refer to the PDF to factor in trait bonuses and penalties. An example of a finished character biography with a skill sheet can be seen here.

If you need help, feel free to reach out to Serris.

The Last Outpost's Shared Universe is a new frontier in RPG-X serials, leveraging our community's unique strength of multiple servers and growing membership to create two new series running simultaneously under the same continuity. Up until now, every series has largely been self-contained within its own universe, but now, we aim to offer one universe with a story experienced from multiple perspectives.

Endurance and Asteria, based on and set aboard the maps created by esteemed map maker GriffinEndurance, will follow the tales of a Federation freighter crew and a Starfleet science station in the Romulan Neutral Zone in the year 2387. The story will involve scientific intrigue, political upheaval, profit and loss, and the human condition.

Asteria is a newly constructed Federation science station nestled on the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone, assigned to research a new element found in the rings of a gas giant by a passing freighter crew during the Dominion War. In order to aid in their research, the station has been equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and computer systems, including a new artificial intelligence-driven main computer. Their findings have the potential to completely revolutionize virtually every aspect of society, or ruin it, making the station and its crew a very inviting target to their neighbors.

These two series are written with crossover potential in mind, and our servers have been upgraded with in-game transporter functionality to beam between servers to facilitate this. Additionally, this will serve as the testbed for the new RPG-X companion, a traditional tabletop roleplaying-style skill system, in an attempt to make players' interactions with the universe more varied and dynamic.

The series are scheduled for Sundays at 1:00 PM EDT / 6:00 PM UTC and will debut in May 2018.

     •     Honorable Mention, Texas State Fair Fried Food Contest, 2238.

History:

Not much is known about the enigmatic resident of the Endurance's kitchen, aside from his exceptional talent for food preparation and mysteriously diverse skill set. The universal translator system can't interpret his race's speech patterns, but he has no problems understanding others, so he attempts to speak English when interacting with the crew... emphasis on attempts. The Inkora'kar have no linguistic concept of synonyms, often resulting in confusing sentences. While he tends to get his point across most of the time, his unusual vernacular requires the other party to pay close attention in order to understand his meaning.

Hu'susveryn'xar is extremely possessive of the galley facilities on board, to the point of becoming physically aggressive on at least one occasion. He does not take kindly to people accessing the galley storage without his direct approval, believing unauthorized use of the lockers to be something of a personal affront. Despite his erratic behavior, the chef has proven to be empathetic and caring... just not very often.

The patch will need to be installed to the directory where you installed the game.

•   Maximum framerate increased to 240 FPS from 200 FPS.

•   r_primitives now defaults to 2 instead of 0.
            •   This fixes performance problems on maps with improper render culling and/or complex brush geometry.
                   •    Previous fixes requiring the .exe file to be renamed to fix performance issues are no longer required.

•   The following player model skins have had team color options removed:
            •   GuinanBlue
            •   GuinanPurple
            •   GuinanRed
            •   PicardGray
            •   PicardGray2
            •   TroiBlue
            •   TroiLavender
            •   TroiPlum
            •   WesleyGray
                   •    This change was made in order to prevent players from appearing as one color but actually being on the opposite team.

Known Issues:

•   No official support for Linux or macOS operating systems.
            •   A Linux client is currently being researched. No macOS client is planned at this time.
                   •    In the meantime, the game has been tested and confirmed to work on WINE.

•   Resolution defaults to full screen 640x480.
•   No in-game options for display 4:3 resolutions above 2048x1536 and 16:9 resolutions above 856x480.
•   No in-game options for 3:2 and 21:9 aspect ratios.
            •   All of these problems can be fixed by setting /r_customwidth and /r_customheight to your desired window size.
                   •    For example, you would type /r_customwidth "1920";r_customheight "1080" in console for 1080p displays.
                   •    /r_fullscreen "0" can be used to force windowed mode.
                   •    If none of your changes are taking effect, try /r_mode "-1" and /vid_restart.

•   No in-game options for anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering.
            •   These must be set manually via your graphics card's control panel.

•   The in-game server browser list doesn't populate.
            •   The last master servers shut down as of 2019. Fixes are being researched.
                   •  For now, the only option is to direct connect via IP or host a virtual LAN VPN server.

•   Users may encounter problems joining servers due to a "bad CD key" error.
            •   This occurs because some servers still use the original game client, instead of ioEF, which has the CD key check disabled.
                   •    This cannot be fixed without a valid CD key. A list of compatible ioEF-based servers is available here.

•   The in-game model list doesn't include all of the player models and skins present in BaseEF.
            •   This is the result of an engine limitation with how many models the menu can display. We are researching possible fixes.

These updates are already applied to new clients downloaded after February 25th, 2018.

Patch Notes - Version 1.5

•   This patch applies to both Ultimate and Standard Edition.

•   Engine has been upgraded to The Last Outpost's custom fork of RPG-X 2.3.4B.
            •   The modified source code is available here.
                   •    This is still backwards compatible with servers based on unmodified RPG-X 2.3.4B.

•   An experimental x86 Windows dedicated server client is now included with all installs.
            •   Linux CentOS x86_64 server binaries are available separately here.
                   •    Port 27016 should be forwarded for TCP and UDP in order to host a server.

•   Shortcut target line parameters are no longer required to launch the game properly.
            •   +set fs_game RPG-X2 +set vm_game 0 +set vm_game 0 +set vm_ui 0 are enabled by default.
                   •    Users may need to remove this string from existing shortcuts in order to avoid unintended game behavior.

•   The player model list is now cached after initial load for the duration of the active session.

•   r_primitives is now set to 2 by default in autoexec.cfg.
            •   This fixes performance problems on maps with improper render culling and/or complex brush geometry.
                   •    Previous fixes requiring the .exe file to be renamed to fix performance issues are no longer required.
