There are three factions in Star Trek Online, as stated above. Starfleet, Klingon Defense Force, and the Romulan Republic. Each faction has their own strengths and weaknesses, like the Romulans with their Singularity Cores, which allow them to fire off singularity powers at the cost of less power increases compared to Matter/Antimatter Warp Cores.

There are also three career paths you can take in Star Trek Online: Tactical, Engineering, and Science. Tactical Officers offer more offensive damage, but sacrifice their defensive stats with their line of starships called Escorts. Engineers offer a more tanky approach for staying alive with increased health and shield stats in addition to more defensive powers and abilities, but they also sacrifice their firepower while using Cruisers. Science Officers use healing and exotic damage types to defeat their opponents using Science Vessels.

Races in Star Trek Online include most known races, such as Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, Klingons, Orions, Romulans, and Remans.
There are special races available for purchase in the C-Store, such as Caitians and Ferasans. Lifetime subscribers also received Liberated Borg Humans, Klingons, and Romulans for use in the game. A full list of races can be seen here on the STO Wiki: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Race
