"What in God's name has happened to Pioneer Station over the last six months? Aren't you all here to keep the peace?"

Yes this episode was mostly filler to get us to where we're going, but it's the best type of filler. The type which has phaser cannons and bomb defusal and interrogations and references to Scottish comedians for no reason of importance.

Starting off, we had a quick glimpse in to the very near future, as we found Walter Peirce seemingly in the employ of Red Dawn since Barnes handed him over to them. Silly Barnes - it's his fault again. But more importantly, it was a worse-for-wear Alicia Costello who found herself tied up within a Klingon compound, pressed for the name of her superior officer who 'gave the order.' It was later implied that she was involved in the death of a Red Dawn General - and that it was his brother who was out for blood.

How did Costello find herself in this situation? Well, after working with McClintock and Walker to defuse the situation on the Promenade (badum-tissssh), she was quickly hurried on to a shuttle by Leona Mason, with expedited transfer orders in hand - expected to return to Earth, presumably to answer for whatever it is that she got up to during her extended time away from the station earlier in the year. Now putting officers on shuttles and sending them away never ends well, I don't know why these higher-ups keep doing it.

All the while, throughout the day, Commodore Mason had prepared Pioneer for battle at a moment's notice. Engineering set about bringing the phaser cannons and enhanced shielding back online - originally installed by Mark Chaplain's command, while security sweeped the station (with Costello finding the explosive device in the Klingon bisto) and Sickbay performing blood screenings of everybody aboard.

Coincidentally, while all of this was going on, more Klingon ships were arriving in the system and remained unresponsive to hails. At the end of it all, one of the ships broke off and accelerated towards Pioneer. Despite not being armed, the ship in itself was a major thread as it was clearly on a collision course. Mason ordered a tractor beam be engaged to slow and repulse the ship. But as McClintock engaged the tractor array, the freshly activated phaser cannons took over. They locked on to the ship and fired upon it. It was destroyed immediately.

The cause and consequences will be explored next week. Thanks for attending - hopefully we can ramp back up to a greater attendance as we head towards the finale. Rate and discuss, above and below - share your theories.

It was indeed quite a filler episode, but having a backstory is always nice. The episode itself felt a little bit slow to me, perhaps because we were only running on a skeleton crew. Overall, it was a good addition to the storyline and introduced another mystery verry nicely at the start. Lets hope the attendance levels will go up again going towards the season finale.
