S01E14 - 'Blade of Olympus' - 08/06/13

[Grizz]

Production Code: 1x14
Episode Title: "Blade of Olympus"
Writer: Grizz
Air Date: 8th June 2013

Opinion of the once highly-favoured Taylor administration is in pieces following G'rath's escape. Doctor Hampton publically claims responsibility for the recommendation to use the former President to gain intelligence. A move which will likely cost her the position of Head of Mission.

Against all odds, a crippled Athena emerges from the blast zone. However, upon learning of the attack on Asteroid Base: Alpha and the death of Commander Sion Bryn, Captain Munro leads the unprepared ship and it's crew on a rage-fuelled manhunt against G'rath. Despite still being armed with the weaponry capable of an offensive against Illuminati fighters, the odds are not in their favour. She has been their greatest ally since day one, but this is the Athena's final journey - and she's not going down alone.

Former Asteroid Base members will be returning to their former characters unless they transferred to Pioneer. In this case, these members have priority over senior positions. New AF-only members will be free to take any available position remaining.

Blade of Olympus Ten Teasers

1 - The opening closed scene introduces a new character while setting the stage for the rest of the episode and the season.

2 - The Athena is seemingly recovered. But she soon goes her own way.

3 - The calm before the storm builds up the motivation behind the unsupported hunt for G'rath.

4 - The hour-long battle sequence is more than just an extended weapons test. Each department will be faced with a situation they need to resolve.

5 - "This ship survived before G'rath before. She can do it again."

6 - The Blade of Olympus wouldn't look out of place next to the USS Vengeance. But what is it really?

7 - Don't worry, guys. I'll take care of your characters. That being said, it's not like you'll need some of them... ever again.

8 - At least we know why Rogan wasn't on Pioneer. Or maybe we don't. Depends on Andzzy ; )

9 - Renee compared Amber Munro to G'rath. That is highlighted here.

10 - "G'rath! ENOUGH!."

8 - At least we know why Rogan wasn't on Pioneer. Or maybe we don't. Depends on Andzzy ; )

Rogan is always an interesting sort of bloke ; )

An Introduction to "Blade of Olympus" by Grizz

Well this was an interesting decision. There's no misdirection here - the Athena is not coming back from this episode and you know that from the word go. I thought it was important to know that going in to the episode in order to lend the piece a certain atmosphere and uncertainty. As the synopsis states, the ship isn't going down alone. I see this episode as a last hurrah of the Asteroid Base era at the end of Asteroid Field's debut season - so it's a shame we may have a few absences, but the show must go on. If Andzzy shows up, we're on to a winner.

What will 'Blade of Olympus' involve? It's not all fire and explosions. But even for the characters that make it to the end of the episode unharmed, there should still be a sense of farewell. Combined with what happened to AB: Alpha in the previous episode, this is something of a watershed moment. All leading up to a confrontation which has been gathering momentum in-universe for years preceding the series. Jack Willis returns to the spot where he was gravely injured in 'When the Sky Falls.' Abigail Watson juggles the death of Sion Bryn with Munro's deteriorating mental state which is fuelling her blood-lust against G'rath.

If my stories during these two SRPs should have presented anything, it's that the good guys don't always win. But it's one way to strengthen the resolve of those left behind. I'm not out of surprises yet.

FYI, Andzzy is showing up. This is guaranteed. The only thing that can stop him now is the Apocalypse and even then that might not stop it.
